ALT 1: Understands a variety of texts and conveys understanding of those texts.
AST 1.1: Comprehension: I can understand and interpret a variety of grade level texts, express my ideas clearly with evidence, and draw connections between texts and ideas.
AST 1.2: Inferences: I can draw reasoned conclusions and explore the implications supported by detail in the text, including theme and how it is developed over the course of a text.
AST 1.3: Word study: I can determine the literal and inferential meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the context of the text.
ALT 2: Analyze and evaluate meaning, structure, and author’s choices in a variety of texts.
AST 2.1: Author’s choice and craft: I can analyze and evaluate how an author’s choices, based on audience and purpose, shape meaning and organization.
AST 2.2: Evaluation - I can identify the structure and evaluate the claims of a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of its evidence.
AST 2.3: Compare and contrast - I can evaluate how a similar subject is treated and developed in different texts.
ALT 3: Structure, organize, and develop ideas clearly and logically in a variety of forms for a range of purposes and audiences.
AST 3.1: Beginning: I can clearly introduce key ideas and engage the reader (e.g., claim, topic, setting, character, etc.).
AST 3.2: Development: I can develop key ideas with task-appropriate techniques (e.g. using evidence, narrative techniques, examples, etc.).
AST 3.3: Sequence and connect ideas logically: I can arrange ideas in a clear, logical order with intentional transitions, paragraphing, and cohesion strategies that support the writing’s purpose and audience.
AST 3.4: Conclusion: I can provide a task-appropriate conclusion (e.g., summary, conflict resolution, call to action, reaffirmation of thesis, etc.).
